Episode 4 is the fourth episode of the first season and the 4th overall episode of Bodyguard.

Short Summary[]

The home secretary's principal protection officer David Budd struggles to come to terms with the fallout from the devastating events of the last 24 hours. The police retake control of the investigation into the attacks from the suddenly weakened security service, and David is questioned by counterterrorism detectives DCI Deepak Sharma and DS Louise Rayburn.

Pushed to breaking point, David is helped back on his feet by his estranged wife, Vicky Budd, and is determined to play an active role in the investigation, starting with those closest to Julia Montague in government. At first Rayburn wants to keep David out of the inquiry, until he delivers a breakthrough.

Full Summary[]

As the episode begins, the media is shown covering the explosion. David Budd (Richard Madden) watches as Sharma (Ash Tandon) arrives at the scene. David ignores a call from Vicky (Sophie Rundle). Sharma speaks with Fenton about Tahir Mahmood. Fenton denies seeing Mahmood on stage. He explains that Knowles approached the stage and the device went off. He tells Sharma about Budd leaving and returning. Anne Sampson (Gina McKee) watches a news report about the incident. Sharma returns to the office and watches CCTV footage of the explosion. They’re not sure whether the explosion started at the briefcase or not. Sharma doesn’t want to obtain a statement from David just yet.

Meanwhile, David ignores another call from Vicky. David is asked to give up all of his phones, computers and other devices. He agrees to do anything to help. His property is searched. Detectives find the location where the gun was hidden. The gun is not found. Sharma and his partner speak with David. David is asked about leaving the auditorium near the time of the explosion. He tells them that he saw someone acting suspiciously and went after them. He learns that Kim died in the explosion. He admits it was Tahir outside. He explains that Tahir needed to get information to Julia. He admits to looking inside of the briefcase. He insists that the briefcase contained nothing but documents.

David is shown the CCTV footage. Sharma accuses David of being involved in the attempts on Julia’s life. Louise changes the subject to David’s electronic devices. He is asked about turning off his mobile phone. He insists he wanted to save battery and not be bothered. He admits to looking at Julia’s voting record because he was curious. Sharma wants to know why David left the hospital. He insists they wanted privacy and he wanted to be alone. David is finally allowed to leave. He tries to spend the night with Vicky. He is allowed inside. David tells Vicky that the detectives took his phone. He admits he is not fine. He tells her about Kim. David wants to know about Vicky’s new boyfriend and whether or not he’ll be a good dad.

David tells her about Julia fighting for her life. David is given the sofa for the night. David looks through Vicky’s purse. He grabs keys and heads to the hospital. He learns that Julia is still in the operating theater. David decides to wait. He watches the news while waiting. Anne attends a meeting. The man taking over Julia’s spot outlines his plans. IS has put out a statement about the attack. Rob (Paul Ready) watches the meeting from outside. Tahir is still being fingered at the number one suspect. They admit that Tahir was vetted thoroughly and had no terrorist ties. Stephen wants to know why the bomb wasn’t detected in the first place. He doesn’t believe that Tahir brought it in. Anne wants access to everyone linked to Tahir.

The investigation is put into the hands of the police. Anne makes sure to rub it in Stephen’s face. Vicky finds that David has disappeared. He is still waiting at the hospital. Roger enters. He tells David that he had his job and failed. David learns that Julia has died. Her death immediately hits the news. David retrieves his gun. David leaves letters for Vicky and the kids. He contemplates killing himself. He cannot do it. He tries again and it looks like he succeeds. CCTV footage is obtained on Tahir. Rob is shown giving Tahir the briefcase. The detectives begin working to ID Rob. Sharma visits Anne. She speaks with him about Rob. Anne wants it left with her. She calls Mike at the Home Office. Vicky arrives outside David’s place.

She rings the door, knocks and yells for David. She hears movement inside and threatens to call the police. She finds David with brass fragments in his head. David explains what he did while she fixes him up. She also notices the letters. He admits it was a blank round. He didn’t know it was. Vicky takes David home and decides to stay with him. David spends time with the kids. He sobs and gets a hug from them. Vicky joins them. Rob speaks with Julia’s replacement, Mike. Rob seems concerned that they want to interview him and search his property. Mike promises that they won’t find anything. David wants to return to work. He insists there is something going on that he cannot figured out. He realizes that someone had access to his flat and tampered with his gun.

Rob speaks with Sharma and Rayburn. He is shown the picture of himself with the briefcase. Rob insists he had a good relationship with Tahir, but didn’t know him very well. He tells the detectives that he gave Tahir the documents for the speech. He insists that the briefcase was Tahir’s to begin with. It is revealed that Rob calls Tahir before the bombing. He insists he just wanted to make sure everything was okay. He explains that he was in the dark about Tahir. Sharma wants to know why David didn’t spot the bomb. David does his own investigating at the hotel. He finds that the security footage has been tampered with. Chris admits that nobody is logged as messing with the footage.

Anne speaks with Louise and Sharma. They admit that CCTV footage supports David’s story. Anne decides to get David to help them interview the woman from the train. David is forced to explain the headwound to Louise. Nadia (Anjli Mohindra) is interviewed with her solicitor. David takes over. Nadia is asked about the bomb. She explains that it came from her husband. She admits he didn’t build it himself. She insists her husband wouldn’t tell her who gave him the gift. She was never allowed to attend the meeting or know who her husband was meeting with. She tells them about one time when he forced her to go to a car park with him. Her husband met with a man and he got something from that man.

She can’t remember what the item was. She admits that the man was Asian. Nadia is shown pictures of potential suspects. She is unable to identify any of them. Nadia agrees to try to help them identify the car park. David tells Louise about someone gaining access to his flat. He believes that there is more to the story. He doesn’t believe Tahir was acting alone. He tells her about the strange visitor, Richard Longcross. Louise wants nothing to do with it. Sharma tells Louise that he doesn’t trust Budd.
