Short Summary[]

Determined to push the investigation forward, principal protection officer David Budd targets enemies of home secretary Julia Montague. As he delves into Julia's political manoeuvring before the attack, David's theories about a conspiracy at the heart of government look increasingly plausible.

But when concerns are raised about David's psychological health and allegations about his professional conduct come to light, the finger suddenly points at him. Friendless in a high-stakes game, David realises too late that he himself could be a target.

They work together in an attempt to identify Longcross. Police finally identify the sniper. David is shown a picture of Andrew Apsted. David denies knowing him. Louise suggests David step away from the inquiry and get some counselling. He refuses. He insists that finding out who killed Julia is the best way to overcome his troubles. They speak with Nadia (Anjli Mohindra) once again. They cannot find CCTV footage linking her husband to the car park. She is unable to identify any of the men in the pictures.

David shows her a picture of Longcross against Louise’s orders. She recognizes him. Longcross is the man her husband met. Sharma is shown footage of the interview. He tries to obtain further details, but cannot. David’s boss interrupts and tells him he is being a pain in the butt. David speaks to Tom before meeting with Sampson. She asks him about Richard Longcross. He tells them that Longcross was spotted in a car with the registration data withheld from the PNC. He tells them about Longcross’s visit and the encrypted file of kompromat. He tells them that the information was associated with a series of scandals, which were ultimately covered up. It relates to the Prime Minister.

He explains that Longcross is tracking keywords related to the kompromat to keep the Security Service’s role hidden. He believes that the device was destroyed in the explosion. Sampson wonders who would benefit. David suggests the Prime Minister, Roger and Mike. Sampson admits that Rob sent Tahir on stage and his boss is now Mike Travis. David isn’t happy that Sampson isn’t willing to act on the information. David speaks with a woman from the hospital about Julia’s official visitors, Roger, Mike and Rob. She is unable to recognize Longcross or Stephen. The woman admits that Roger was anxious that Julia’s personal items were not found. David tracks down Roger (Nicholas Gleaves).

David asks Roger about an item in Julia’s possession before her death. David wants to know what Roger was after. Rob MacDonald (Paul Ready) watches as Mike attends a meeting with Stephen. They speak about Richard Longcross. Stephen denies knowing the man. Mike wants the Security Service to be opened up to an investigation. Stephen isn’t interested in letting that happen. Rob watches as Roger arrives. He speaks with Mike (Vincent Franklin). Roger tells him about David. Meanwhile, David tracks down Rob. He wonders why Rob made it a point not to be at the speech on the day of the bombing. He tells Rob that it is time to start telling the truth.

He threatens Rob and tells him to tell the SO15 the truth. Louise and Sharma speak with Rob moments later. David watches the interview. He admits they thought Julia was preparing for a leadership bid. He explains that Roger and Mike wanted to stop a damaging leadership contest. They wanted to embarrass her politically. Rob promises that he didn’t intend to harm her physically. He admits they wanted to use Tahir to create the embarrassing moment. He promises that none of them knew anything about the bomb. Rob insists that they’re not murderers. Afterwards, David explains that Julia rejected Rob’s advances a couple of times. That could have been motive enough.

He believes that Rob is telling the truth. Meanwhile, Longcross and his team spy on Vicky Budd (Sophie Rundle). He tells them that they’ll be forced to be bold since their house is guarded around the clock. Stephen (Stuart Bowman) returns and admits that they’re in peril while the kompromat remains out there. He suggests it is easier to push back now that everyone is afraid of being implicated. Stephen ridicules Longcross for letting Budd get one other on him. Longcross suggests it is the other way around. David meets with his boss. He learns that there is an allegation of intimacy between Julia and him. There is even a recording of it supposedly. David realizes that Longcross bugged the room. David recognizes that Longcross and the Security Service are doing.

Craddock wants him to take some time off. David explains that they want the same. David speaks with Vicky. He tells her about the affair. She admits that a security office visited the ward and told her about their relationship already. David wants to check the CCTV. Vicky recognizes the man as Longcross. She wants to know more. David believes Vicky and the kids will be safe. Louise speaks to the team about the planting of the bombs. David tells her about Longcross and his activities. David is told about Andrew and the group he formed. David wonders if Andrew wasn’t on a watch list because he was recruited by the Security Service. David promises to see a doctor when the case is solved. David goes over evidence on the Thornton Circus Shooting.

He researches the firearm and bullets. David meets with an old friend and shows him a Makarov. David requests a PSL with no history traceable back to him. The man agrees to make a couple of calls. Louise interrupts him. She explains that footage from Vicky’s ward was deleted. She shows him pictures of strange people entering Vicky’s house and pretending to be SO15 agents. The Security Service searched the property. They believe that Budd knows where the evidence is hidden. They agree to meet at Julia’s in the morning. They prepare to search the property together. Afterwards, David returns to the office. Fenton seems suspicious. He speaks with the boss. He tells her about David’ headwound and everyone just letting him roam around.

Chanel runs into David. She explains that she is sorry for what happened to Julia. She apologizes for the scene she caused when she was fired. David agrees to have a drink with her some time. They exchange numbers. David watches as Chanel leaves and gets into a car with Luke Aitkens. He snaps a picture of them together. David tells Louise about the car, which is owned by a company based in the Cayman Islands. He believes that a lot of money would be needed to kill Julia. They speak about Luke, who has been linked to organized crime. They wonder why Chanel would be contacting David. Tom interrupts and tells David that the boss is looking for him. Tom agrees to drive him over.

David is told he will go on indefinite leave. She takes his firearm ticket too. David gives up everything. He calls Louise and blames her. That night, David sneaks into Julia’s apartment. He takes the picture and removes the backing. He finds the tablet.
